English Place-Name Society WRY Vol. 1. p. 200. It takes its name from the surname of the Machon family who owned land in Ecclesall. Cite example of William Machone 1495 in Hunter’s Hallamshire p. 372. Reaney suggests Machon is a variant form of Mason i.e. an occupational surname.
