If using the adjacent car park\, please notify Reception of your vehicle registration number. \nToday\, Steve Silverstone will give us an insight into the history of the former psychiatric hospital.  Opened in 1872 with 720 beds and with a nurses’ home built on site in 1893\, Middlewood was also known as the South Yorkshire Asylum\, West Riding Asylum\, Wadsley and Wadsley Mental Hospital.  During the First World War it became the Wharncliffe War Hospital and was designated the Wharncliffe Emergency Hospital in World War Two.
