SUMMARY:My Ancestor was a Liar:  ignorance\, half-truths or wilful deceit? by Dave Annal
DESCRIPTION:  \nSifting through the evidence to find the truth (or what passes for the truth in the world of genealogy) is a skill which all serious family historians need to develop. The information left by our ancestors is all-too-frequently misleading\, inaccurate or just plain wrong! As we become more experienced we find that they had any number of reasons to be economical with the truth. \nOf course\, sometimes our ancestors simply didn’t know the answer to the questions thrown at them by the clerks\, registrars and enumerators. Using real examples\, this talk will look at some of the reasons why our ancestors might have lied and offer suggestions on how to recognise their varying degrees of ignorance\, half-truths and wilful deception \n

SUMMARY:"King Coal" The Fitzwilliams by Steve Silverstone
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n A look at the history of the influential\, but troubled Fitzwilliam family. We shall learn how the family’s wealth was\naccumulated along with its buildings and land.\nDespite the trappings of wealth\, the family appeared to be cursed\, and suffered from hereditary\nillnesses. Constant rumours of a family conspiracy rocked the very foundations of the family. We will also discover what caused the eventual demise of the estate.

SUMMARY:The 'Hidden Messages' in the Portraits at Hardwick Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear Maureen Taylor talk about how the 16th century saw an explosion in portrait painting\, which mainly started during the reign of Henry VIII and his promotion of Hans Holbein. Only the very rich could afford to have their portrait painted and as wealth was demonstrated through them\, people would have worn their best and most fashionable outfit\, together with their most expensive lace and jewels. The symbolism used in the portraits became talking points and this was the intention – to get people talking!

SUMMARY:Wagon and tilt - the English portable theatre and family history
DESCRIPTION:To start our new programme of talks\, we welcome back Dr Ann Featherstone. Portable theatres were part of the travelling entertainment community from the 18th century and\, like showmen and circuses\, often were family concerns. Portable history\, however\, is much less well-known and understood. This talk aims to put that right through the perspective of their family history and performers.
