SUMMARY:The 'Hidden Messages' in the Portraits at Hardwick Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear Maureen Taylor talk about how the 16th century saw an explosion in portrait painting\, which mainly started during the reign of Henry VIII and his promotion of Hans Holbein. Only the very rich could afford to have their portrait painted and as wealth was demonstrated through them\, people would have worn their best and most fashionable outfit\, together with their most expensive lace and jewels. The symbolism used in the portraits became talking points and this was the intention – to get people talking!

SUMMARY:Wagon and tilt - the English portable theatre and family history
DESCRIPTION:To start our new programme of talks\, we welcome back Dr Ann Featherstone. Portable theatres were part of the travelling entertainment community from the 18th century and\, like showmen and circuses\, often were family concerns. Portable history\, however\, is much less well-known and understood. This talk aims to put that right through the perspective of their family history and performers.

SUMMARY:Visit to National Memorial Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of a resolution to the Covid19 situation we are arranging a day trip by coach to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas on 26th June 2021. Whilst the military aspect of the NMA is obvious there are also gardens dedicated to pre/neonatal deaths\, the Home Front\, Bevan Boys\, the Burma Railway and much more.  Details may be found on their website. For those who find walking difficult there is a road train which goes around the site providing a commentary on the various memorials; it is fairly inexpensive.  The NMA itself is free so the price for the day will be approximately £12 per person which is certainly good value. If you would like to join the trip please contact the Society Secretary.
